Finally decided to make writing my full-time job last year, I often became tongue-tied when I was being asked what I do for a living. I mean I’m an English/yoga/Pilates teacher but at the moment, I’m not teaching and in the town where I came from, writing is not a real job. People don’t understand that it’s possible to have a job without having to go to work.
Now that I’m actually making a bit of a living out of my work, I just answer proudly that I’m a writer every time someone asks what do I do for a living.
You’re absolutely right. We are not defined by what we do in our life. We are not our outside world. We are shaped by so many factors. Job is just one of them but certainly not the only.
Well said and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing :)
