I had the very same question growing up. Buddhism, with which I grew up with, explained this as the wheel of karma. The teaching says that we are born certain ways because of our karma. I guess we'll try to find the answer to this question as long as we're breathing on this Earth. Hopefully this question can generate more kindness from those who are born more fortunate :)
